Teen arrested after school blaze

Oct 20 2006

DETECTIVES investigating a fire at the disused Whitesmore Secondary School, Chelmsley Wood, at the weekend arrested a 15-year-old local youth on suspicion of arson.

He was released on police bail pending further inquiries. "The investigation is ongoing," Inspector Iain Grant, of Solihull CID, said yesterday.

A three-storey block at the school in Chapelhouse Road was gutted by the fire, which broke out just after 9pm on Sunday. The emergency services received several calls from local residents who saw the flames shooting into the night sky.

West Midlands Fire Service deployed 20 crews to fight the blaze, which occurred eight months after Light Hall School at Shirley was burned down by a fire that was also started deliberately. The culprits were never caught.

Whitesmore School, an under-performing comprehensive, was closed in the summer and pupils transferred to the new Grace Academy nearby.
